Bicycling/Walking
When it comes to transportation, good old fashioned human power may be the best type of fuel of all. It's not just better for the environment, it's better for you. It should go without saying, but just in case: get out there and walk more! OneThing you can do is leave the car behind and hoof it whenever you can.
Bicycling is another great human-powered mode of transportation. It's not just for recreation. It's a great way to get from point A to point B. More and more people are biking to work on a regular basis. Even if that just means once a month or so. Hartford is doing OneThing to encourage this by installing dozens of new bike racks throughout the city. If you live too far from work, OneThing you can do is replace a few other short car trips with bike trips. No matter where you live, there's probably a place you shop, worship, play or learn within easy biking distance.
There are even organizations that can help you make bicycle commuting a way of life. Click on them to learn more:
The Capital Region Council of Government's Bike to Work
initiative can help you plan and implement bicycle commuting to your place of work
CT Safe Routes to School
helps make walking and bicycling to school safe, convenient and fun for children.
