Insulation

Properly insulating your home is one of the fastest and most cost-efficient ways to reduce energy waste and save money. A good insulating system, including a combination of products and construction techniques, can increase comfort while cutting heating and cooling costs by up to 10% !

How Insulation Works

It's simple really. Insulation provides resistance to heat flow. Warm air naturally wants to move to a cooler space. So in the winter, heat wants to flow out of your home. And in the summer, heat wants to creep in from the outside. Insulation reduces this flow so your heating and cooling systems don't have to work as hard. You're more comfortable and you save energy.

Do I Need More Insulation?

Your home might not be properly insulated if you:
  • Have an older home and haven't added insulation. Only 20% of homes built before 1980 are well insulated.
  • Are uncomfortably cold in the winter or hot in the summer.
  • Build a new home or addition, or install new siding or roofing.
  • Think your energy bills are higher than they should be.
  • Are bothered by noise from outside. Insulation muffles sound.

Adding insulation is a very, very powerful OneThing. But it may be best done by a qualified contractor. You can also speak with your retailer about choosing the best product for your home and proper installation techniques. If you're a real do-it-yourselfer, there's a great guide to all things insulation at the Department of Energy's website
